Create a lasting legacy for your community.
The Kawartha Community Foundation (KCF) offers individuals, families, and groups a way to support the causes they care about through the creation of charitable funds. All funds are administered in accordance with the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) and regulations from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for public foundations.
What you need to know.
-
Fund Purpose Must Align with Our Mission
All funds must support the Foundation’s broad charitable purposes, which include promoting health, mental health, community well-being, education, the environment, arts and culture, and other public benefits. If your project aligns with these goals, we’re here to help you make it happen.
-
Minimum Contribution
A minimum donation of $10,000 is required to establish a named fund with the Foundation. This initial contribution ensures sustainability and enables effective long-term grantmaking.
-
Collaboration Opportunities
If you're working with a local non-profit that isn't a registered charity (such as a community group or firefighting association), there may still be options. In many cases, partnering with a municipality or other eligible body can allow the project to move forward while complying with legal and regulatory requirements.
-
Flexible Options for Community Projects
For smaller or time-limited projects, donors may consider partnering with an existing community fund, such as the Bobcaygeon, Omemee or Fenelon Falls Community Fund, subject to approval by its advisory committee. This can offer a streamlined path to support grassroots initiatives without needing to establish a separate fund.

Funds Must Support Qualified Recipients
While anyone can donate to a fund, disbursement of those funds must be made to qualified donees recognized by the CRA. These include:
- Registered Canadian charities
- Educational institutions (with charitable registration)
- Religious organizations (for inclusive, non-denominational purposes)
- Government bodies (municipalities, Indigenous governments, etc.)
Unfortunately, individuals, private businesses, and projects on private land are not eligible to receive direct support. For example, a fund cannot be used to improve or repair a privately owned building or business.
